Microneedling / PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma)
Microneedling is all the buzz lately! Microneedling is a method of stimulating collagen growth in the skin, which can be used to minimize the appearance of wrinkles and scarring. The theory behind microneedling is wound the skin, to inturn, to coax the skin cells (fibroblasts to create new collagen. This helps to tighten the existing tissue, thereby improving skin texture. At Aponi Aesthetics we choose to use the Rejuvapen micro-needling device (www.rejuvapen.com).
The benefits of microneedling are:
- Minimizes appearance of pores
- Reduces fine lines and wrinkles
- Lifts, tightens and rejuvenates skin
- Improves the appearance of stretch marks
- Minimizes acne scarring
- Reduces the appearance of traumatic scars
- Lightens pigmentation
How does microneedling work?
The Rejuvapen system utilizes 9 precisely spaced micro needles which create tiny vertical perforations into the epidermal and dermal layers of the skin. By creating a slight injury to the skin in a gentle way, the skin repairs itself by stimulating collagen and elastin. The end result is tighter and healthier looking skin. In addition, serums can be applied before and after micro needling to encourage a deeper penetration of high quality ingredients. Serums such as growth factors and peptides can be ‘channeled’ into the skin for maximum effect and improvement.
What is involved in the procedure?
The patient is cleansed and wiped with alcohol beforehand and a topical numbing cream is applied to the areas that will be treated. A new, disposable sanitized needle tip is used for every treatment and the settings are adjusted on the pen according to the skin type and the condition being treated. The level of intensity will vary throughout the course of the treatment based on the sensitivity of certain areas (for instance, around the eyes the setting is reduced). Each treatment takes about 30 minutes.
What is the post op care?
Most patients look as though that have a moderate sunburn and skin will feel warm. These symptoms begin to resolve within a couple of hours and will be recovered in 24 hours. A mild cleanser and moisturizer is recommended post op. We also recommend using the breathable foundation, Oxygenetics to assist in the healing of the skin while protecting it.
What is PRP and microneedling?
Another option with microneedling is using your own healthy plasma protein cells that are used to assist in the healing of aged and damaged skin. A certified medical assistant or nurse will draw your blood and extract the healthiest part of the blood called plasma using a centrifuge. The healthy plasma is then applied to the skin that has been microneedled so it absorbs deep into the skin. Another option is to reinjected into areas of the face. Since PRP is a natural substance from your own body, there is no risk of allergies or hypersensitivity.
What about PRP and Dermal Fillers?
Instead of waiting for the PRR results to take effect, the plasma can be combined with a hyaluronic acid dermal filler for maximum and more immediate results.
What are the contra-indications?
- Active acne
- Raised keloid scars
- Actinic keratosis
- Skin Cancer
How many microneedling treatments will I need?
Microneedling can be performed once a month for 4-6 treatments, based on the condition of the skin.
